Photographed July 2001

Beirut ...

A wonderful city, in a wonderful country, blown to pieces by war and civil war.

We have all seen the images that remind us of Dresden or Hiroshima .

What has happened since the end of the war?

I spent just one day in Beirut. I was amazed by its friendly people (which cannot always be said about Lebanese abroad) and by their will and energy to work towards the future of their country.
Still, Beirut has an enormous number of empty, damaged houses and buildings. They stand between brand new steel and glass towers, like ghosts reminding the inhabitants of the terrible tragedy.

The houses...
