The difficult journey along frozen roads was finally brought to a standstill by a snowstorm that would last seven days. The cars were snowed in in no time. Locals helped the Americans out of their cars and gave them shelter. The queue, some 300 metres long, was stuck in the snow for another three weeks. Attempts at digging out the cars failed and after a few days the American families were evacuated and taken to the port by train. The cars were left behind.
