Forges de Clabecq

Photographed Autumn 2005-2008

page 1/5

Where the city meets the countryside, at the intersection of a motorway, canal and railroad, lies a steel factory that once employed over five thousand people.
Keeping jobs and production became a struggle between communism and capitalism, the working class against the managment. Unions, workmen, state police, official beneficiaries, politicians and judges opposed each other in the arena, in front of TV cameras. The fight was mean, underhanded, and primitive; the outcome predetermined.

When the dust settled, several buildings were emptied and the blast furnace lay idle. Time stopped.
